Hartford Business Journal: New online food-ordering service makes New Haven delicacies available across U.S.

If you live outside of Connecticut and want to see if New Haven-style “apizza” – recently recognized by Congress as the nation’s best – stacks up to its reputation, now you have an option.

An online food-ordering service featuring authentic Italian and gourmet entrees, breads, desserts, meats, cheeses and, of course, apizza, has launched in the Elm City. It ships its products across the United States.

The business, New Haven Direct Connect, was started by New Haven native Steve Thomas, an Italian-American with deep roots in the region.

"Hearing how difficult it is for New Haveners and Northeasterners to find the same quality food after relocating, I decided to build a business to reconnect people with the foods they love and miss, bringing a taste of home to wherever they are," Thomas said.

The online retailer sells products from New Haven-area staples such as Liuzzi Cheese, Lamberti Sausage, Lucibello's Pastry Shop, Apicella's Bakery, Durante's Pasta, Napoli Foods, Claire's Corner Copia, Petonito's Pastry Shop, Ferraro's Market meats, Blackie's relish, Foxon Park soda and Hummel Brothers meats.

The apizza comes from Grand Apizza, which was founded in New Haven in 1948 and now has locations in Clinton, Madison and Guilford.

More than 160 products are available.

The minimum order is $75. Orders ship in boxes with insulated liners and frozen gel packs to keep the products cold. Packages ship via UPS Second Day Air.
