In 1933 German immigrants William and Robert Hummel borrowed $1,000.00 to purchase a bankrupt company called Phil’s Sausage Kitchen. Since both William and Robert had been apprentice sausage makers back in Germany they knew what it would take to make the highest quality product to offer their customers. Apicella's Bakery is an Italian bakery that opened in New Haven, Connecticut in 1920. It was founded by Italian immigrant Geremia Apicella, who grew up in the village of Minori in Italy's Amalfi Coast. He came to New Haven in 1907 and started his first bread bakery in 1914.

Today Apicella's is one of the largest Italian bread bakeries in Greater New Haven County.

Apicella’s Bakery continues to be family owned and operated. Apicella’s strives to maintain a friendly relationship with our New Haven roots and continue to support our area schools and businesses and look forward to growth and new business ventures.

A family recipe for decades, Blackie’s Hot Pepper Relish – 2 x 12 oz jars

Claire LaPia and Frank Criscuolo were married on February 22, 1975. Claire was a registered nurse and Frank was a musician who played bass and lead guitar. Deeply in love, they wanted to be together as much as possible and working together was the way to accomplish that goal. Claire loved to cook and while they were both raised in traditional Italian-American families, each in a family of really good cooks and bakers, Claire's mother, Anna Bigio LaPia was “obsessed” with eating delicious, fresh foods, homemade food, with lots of fruits and vegetables, grains and beans. “Eat this, it's good for you” and “We don't eat foods with ingredients I can't pronounce” were her mantras. Claire wanted to cook that way for the masses. She and Frank believed and still believe that eating well really is the best defense against illness and disease. Today, scientific research supports that theory. Mother was right!

Claire and Frank Criscuolo opened Claire's Corner Copia on September 17, 1975.

Durante’s Pasta was founded in West Haven, Connecticut by Amedeo and Carmelina Durante in 1985. Amedeo and Carmelina were both born and raised in Ruviano, a small town just outside of Caserta, Italy. It was when Amedeo immigrated to the U.S. in 1967 that he began working in Italian import stores with the hopes of one day opening his own business, and in 1977 Amedeo did just that.

Durante’s Market was opened on Elizabeth Street in Derby, Connecticut. Carmelina immigrated to the U.S. the following year and joined Amedeo in the business.

As the years went on and their customers’ demand for homemade pasta grew, the Durante’s went on to open Durante’s Pasta on Fenwick Street in West Haven, Connecticut in the spring of 1985.

As co-owner Peter Ferraro puts it, “we have a very unique family.” And “family” is what drives him to keep the business alive. His father, Sal Ferraro, launched the business under the name Mohawk Market in early 1952.

“My father and mother had four boys, and all of us grew up in the store,” Peter Ferraro said. The family gets along well, Peter Ferraro said. “We’re always together,” he said. When it comes to the family business, the kinship transcends blood relations.

“Employees just don’t leave. They become family. It’s amazing, and I see it in everyone that comes on here,” store manager Al Lauro said when asked why he has stuck around for so long. Lauro has worked for Ferraro’s for more than 15 years, he said. Other employees have stayed for as long as 30. “They’re the best people I ever worked for,” he said of the Ferraros. “I never have any intentions of leaving.”

While many of the faces at Ferraro’s have stayed the same, some aspects of the business have changed. What started as a meat market on State Street in New Haven became a longtime staple of the Wooster Square neighborhood after moving to Grand Avenue.

In late 2020, Ferraro’s would relocate to a smaller storefront in North Haven on Universal Drive North. The new Ferraro’s location is less than half the size of the former one, making it easier to manage. “A lot of the customers followed us,” he said. “We also get a lot of new customers that did not come to the New Haven store.” The family passed 70 years in business early this year, he said. New Haven Direct Connect is proud to be a part of the Ferraro’s tradition.

Foxon Park Beverages, Inc. is a family owned and operated business located in East Haven, Connecticut for over 90 years.

Foxon Park was founded in 1922 in East Haven by Matteo Naclerio, an immigrant from Italy. Lamberti's Italian Sausage was founded in 1946 by Jim and Jean Lamberti. Jim had discovered that the sausage offered at his family's local market was growing in popularity. The Faggio Family has owned and operated Lucibello’s for over 60 years. In 1959, Frank Faggio purchased the Pastry Shop at its original location on Chapel Street, where he worked since an early age and learned his craft.

His perseverance and hard work led to its rapid growth, moving the well-known bakery to its current location on Grand Avenue. Frank’s passion, pursuit of excellence, and incredible work ethic grew his business into a successful, honored establishment.

Shipping & Delivery

SHIPPING PROCESS

We carefully package your fresh, gourmet foods in 200lb corrugate boxes with insulated liners and cold gel packs like you might see from meal services like Hello Fresh or Blue Apron.

Note: we do not ship frozen product yet, only chilled. You’ll find your chilled items like meats and cheeses in the box inside of the insulated liner, and your dry goods like cookies or jarred antipasto items outside of it, packed so they don’t break.

SHIPPING METHOD

We ship your product via UPS 2 Day air and send you a confirmation with tracking number.

We try and ship on Tuesdays and Wednesdays so you will get your package on Thursday or Friday, but iit may take up to 10 days to receive it from date of purchase- but we will get it to you! We’re just starting out with a small team!
